Jack Carneal, author of Destroy Your Safe and Happy Lives, was born and raised in Richmond and lives in Baltimore, where he teaches at Towson University. He spent much of his twenties and thirties as the drummer in the Anomoanon, a band with Charlottesville roots that frequently backed musician Will Oldham on various tours.
Grace Elizabeth Hale is the Commonwealth Professor of American Studies and History at the University of Virginia. She is the author of Cool Town: How Athens, Georgia, Launched Alternative Music and Changed American Culture, out this past spring from the University of North Carolina Press. Her previous books include A Nation of Outsiders: How the White Middle Class Fell in Love with Rebellion in Postwar America and Making Whiteness: The Culture of Segregation in the South, 1890–1940.
