Lynn Martin Shiver

Saturday, May 04 from 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Join us for a celebration of Lynn Martin’s posthumous collection of poems, Shiver.

Please join us for a celebratory book party for Shiver by Nelson County poet Lynn Martin. This event will be free and open to the public.

Shiver is being released posthumously by Tender Buttons Press, a New York City press dedicated to publishing the best in experimental women’s writing. Shiver bears out poet Mary Oliver’s observation that Martin has “the real gift.” Readings of selected poems from Shiver by fellow artists and friends will be followed by a reception. CDs featuring Martin performing her work with backup musicians will be available exclusively at the event, free with book purchase. If you would like to pre-order Shiver, please call the shop at 434-295-2552.

Born in the Bronx, Lynn Martin settled down in Nelson County, Virginia, where she lived for many years in a cabin in the mountains. While working as a carpenter, Martin earned a BA from Sweet Briar College, where she studied with Mary Oliver and Cornelius Eady. She went on to earn a MEd from Lynchburg College and became a much-loved special education teacher, bringing her love of poetry to her students, who responded by writing many remarkable stories and poems of their own. A lifelong poet, Martin performed her work with backup musicians in various venues. Her poems appear in Appalachia, Poetry East, Appalachian Journal, Spillway, Poetry Northwest, and The Southern Poetry Review.
