For every Stephen Curry and LeBron James, superstars who mold basketball in their own images, there are ten million players for whom the opposite is true: players who dissolve into the game, becoming more or less invisible along the way. When Ian Johnson retired from professional basketball at twenty-seven, he was a ghost, a small-time star exhausted and confused by twenty years with an identity-sapping sport he didn’t know how to love. Away from the coaches and competitions that had run his life, he was faced with a choice: commit suicide or find a way to start again. From Rio to the Himalayas, from the despair of an obsessive-compulsive mindset to the joy of a swish, The Bounce and The Echo is his attempt to discover his sport, and therefore himself, anew.
Ian Johnson played Division I basketball at Davidson College before playing five professional seasons in European leagues. He currently coaches basketball in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is his first book.
