Irène P. Mathieu (she/her) is an academic pediatrician, writer, and public health researcher. She is the author of milk tongue (Deep Vellum, 2023); Grand Marronage (Switchback Books, 2019), which won Editor’s Choice for the Gatewood Prize and was the runner-up for the Cave Canem/Northwestern Prize; orogeny (Trembling Pillow Press, 2017), which won the Bob Kaufman Book Prize; and the galaxy of origins (dancing girl press & studio, 2014). K. Avvirin Berlin is a poet, scholar, and painter. She is an assistant professor of English at Washington and Lee University. Her poetry has been published or is forthcoming in The Georgia Review, The Iowa Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Boston Review Online, and Women’s Studies Quarterly. Berlin’s scholarly article on Sojourner Truth and Black feminism appeared in the latest issue of Nineteenth-Century Literature. Her reviews have been printed in Women’s Review of Books. Her visual art appears on the cover of her poetry collection, Leda’s Daughters, which won the 2023 Jean Feldman Poetry Prize and was published this October with Washington Writers Publishing House. Raised in Harlem, she lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, with her husband and their two cats.
