Mae Mallory World Defense Committee

Saturday, March 22 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Paula Marie Seniors will speak about her new book.

This in-person event is a part of the 2025 Virginia Festival of the Book and will take place at the shop.

In 1961, an African American working-class self-defense advocate, Mae Mallory, provided support and weapons to the Negroes with Guns Movement. She spent thirteen months in a Cleveland jail after being accused of kidnapping a Ku Klux Klan couple. Other African American women radical activists and organizations bound together to support Mallory. Later, these individuals joined the Tanzanian, Grenadian, and Nicaraguan World Revolutions. In Mae Mallory, World Defense Committee, and World Revolutions, Paula Marie Seniors blends personal accounts with theoretical frameworks of organic intellectual and community feminism—along with several other theoretical frameworks—in analyzing African American radical women’s activism in this era. Her book answers the underlying question of why these women chose radical activism and aligned themselves with revolutionary governments, linking Black human rights to world revolutions.
