Join us for a book talk with photographer Michael O. Snyder, who will speak about his new book, Alleghania: A Central Appalachian Folklore Anthology. This in-person event will be free and open to the public. We recommend arriving early for the best seating.

About the Book: Welcome to Alleghania, an inspiring new portrait of Central Appalachia.

Responding to the gorgeous ancient landscape of the Allegheny Mountains, photographer Michael O. Snyder presents a collection of portraits from West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

From farmers and herbalists, to skateboarders and train hoppers, Buddhist monks to Christian pastors, this is a love letter to an often overlooked part of Appalachia—a place where tradition and transformation intertwine.

A dispatch from the heart of America, Alleghania asks us to reconsider our image of a region and its people. Through a rich tapestry of voices and striking photography, Snyder’s new body of work brings Central Appalachia’s grit, grace, and heart clearly into view.

About the Author: Michael O. Snyder is a photographer and filmmaker documenting the dynamic relationship between social and environmental change. He has worked in more than fifty countries around the world, with stories featured by outlets such as National Geographic, The Guardian, and The Washington Post. He has been honored by awards such as the Portrait of Humanity Award, the Wellcome Prize for Photography, NPPA’s Best of Photojournalism, the Smithsonian Magazine Photography Awards, and the Sony World Photography Awards. In 2024 he was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for Photography. Originally from a small town in Appalachia, Snyder has lived around the world, including long-term stints in Scotland, Japan, Hawaiʻi, and New Zealand. He currently resides in central New York.
